Arctic Studies Minor

The Arctic is an important partner in our Maine and global societies and economies. The Arctic region has an abundance of natural and cultural resources which influences systems in the region and beyond. The minor in Arctic Studies provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and demonstrating proficiency in the economics, business, governance, environment, culture, and sustainability of the Arctic. Students will participate in coursework at UMFK and have the
ability to engage in research and courses throughout the University of Maine System.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of the land and environment of the Arctic region;
2. Demonstrate proficient knowledge of the diversity of the indigenous and living people
and cultures of the Arctic region;
3. Demonstrate proficient knowledge in contemporary governance, security, business, and
economic issues in the Arctic region;
4. Leverage technology to perform analyses of Arctic social and scientific research and data
sets;
5. Demonstrate the capacity to develop research questions, conduct research independently
or through affiliation and demonstrate an awareness of Arctic research and issues;
6. Demonstrate the ability to present in writing and orally on Arctic topics in an area of
interest.

Minor Requirements


At least 18 credits are required to complete the minor.

*Electives must be approved by UMFK faculty.
