The Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BAS) degree provides an opportunity for students to develop programs of study to meet their academic objectives and interests. Students may structure a program of study so that their self-designed BAS degree reflects either specialized or broad patterns of educational experience. Courses comprising the BAS may be available on campus or online. However, since not all UMFK courses are accessible online this may limit options for the self-design component. When developing their BAS programs of study, international students who may be interested in the BAS degree should be aware of opportunities and limitations, if any, connected to their immigration status as it pertains to online courses.
The BAS program is eligible for participation in the 3 + 3, Bachelor - Juris Doctor, Accelerated Pathway (MaineLaw) and the 4 + 1 Bachelor - MBA, Accelerated Pathway (MaineMBA) .
The following guidelines are unique to the BAS degree:
- Students graduating with the BAS degree are not required to complete a specified major or minor.
- With the advice of a faculty advisor and the approval of the division dean and the Academic Affairs office, students may create either (a) a self-designed program plan of at least 30 credits or (b) a sub-plan of at least 18 credits. The title of the self-designed program plan or sub-plan will be explicit in the plan and will be consistent with the emphasis reflected in the proposed BAS curriculum. The title will be recorded on the transcripts of those graduating with a BAS degree.
- Alternatively, students who do not create a self-designed program or sub-plan but who meet the general graduation requirements described below will be awarded a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in General Studies.
- Students enrolled in the BAS degree may take any course offered by the University for undergraduate credit, provided course prerequisites are satisfied or with permission of the instructor.
- Students may transfer at any time from the BAS degree to any other undergraduate program provided they meet the admissions requirements of the program into which transfer is sought. Credits accrued in the BAS program will be applied as appropriate in the elected program.
- Students may transfer at any time into the BAS program provided they meet the grade point average required for transfer between degree programs.
