SOC 348: Food, Society, and Environment3 credits
Covers contemporary issues of food, diet, nutrition, and health; the production and environmental impacts of food choices, and issues of “food equality”. We will examine the causes and consequences of major famine events such as the 1840’s Irish Famine. We will compare USA and Canadian and European Union legislation, regulation and subsidies concerning food-crops. We will discuss genetic modification, hybrid crops, organic and industrial food production, and other issues relevant to the global food supply. Offered Fall (2017, 2021).
Prerequisite(s): SOC 100 or sophomore standing. Co-requisite(s): none.
