During the freshmen and sophomore years of the program, students study the various content areas they will be teaching in an elementary classroom, as they work toward completing the requirements of the liberal arts core and the general education requirements of the Bachelor of Science degree. At the same time, students are required to participate in one education course per semester, to complete 75 hours of service and volunteer work in public schools and to pass the Core Academic Skills for Educators Praxis exams by the end of their sophomore year. The 75 hours of school volunteer/service is distributed at 25 hours for each of the following courses: EDU 214 ; EDU 299 ; and EDU 339 . The courses and experiences over the first two years, help prepare students for the education courses in the elementary major, their associated lab classes and school practicum, as well as, the program capstone experience: student teaching. The four early education classes are as follows:
At the end of each semester, education majors meet with their faculty advisor to discuss their progress toward degree requirements and career goals. For a student to enroll in the upper level elementary education courses in their junior year, they must:
- Complete a minimum of 60 credits towards their bachelor’s degree.
- Complete EDU 100 /EDU 214 /EDU 299 /EDU 339 with 75 hours of volunteer/service work in a school
- Pass the Praxis exam, Core Academic Skills for Educators*
- Be in good academic standing with the University
- Complete the following 42 credits in the liberal arts core with a minimum grade of “C”:
- 6 credits of English
- 6 credits of Mathematics
- 6 credits of Science
- 6 credits of Social Science (anthropology, geography, economics, government/political sciences, and history)
- 18 credits of elective course work

Upper Level Elementary Education Required Courses*
*A minimum grade of “C” is required in all courses of the Education Major. Student Teaching Requirements
**Students apply to the Director of Student Teaching during the semester prior to the student teaching assignment. Course work is not permitted during student teaching without permission of the Education Division. At the time of student teaching assignment, students must have:
- Completed and defended a General Education portfolio for the Bachelor of Science Degree
- Completed the upper level Elementary Education courses with a minimum grade of “C” and includes documented 280 hours of pre-student teaching practicum
- Successfully completed Praxis II exams
- Maintained a Cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Prepared to defend with mentor teachers a professional education portfolio based on the 11 Common Core Teaching Standards.
