PSA 319: Interviewing Concepts in Modern Policing

3 credits

This course is designed to introduce students to law enforcement interviewing skills, techniques and considerations, as well as acquaint them with relevant historical and theoretical context. It will differentiate between interviews and interrogations, and familiarize students with both within the context of the law. Emphasis will be on the importance of preparation and observation and how interview techniques change depending upon the subject.  The course will highlight the importance of rapport building and interviewer actions, and how these relate to the interview subject. A variety of interview techniques will be introduced, analyzed, and implemented. Verbal and nonverbal communication between the interviewer and the subject will be examined, and confessions will be discussed. Three hour lecture
