Vision Statement

Consistent with the mission of the University of Maine at Fort Kent, a regional university that serves the needs of the St. John Valley and the state of Maine, the Business Management Program fosters excellence in scholarship and academic achievement in an interactive educational environment. The online option provides flexibility for transfer students to earn a University of Maine business degree and provides two-degree completion pathways for students with between 60 transferable credits to 90 transferable credits previously earned and with opportunities to convert prior activities through the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) model. Please note, international students enrolled in distance education (online) programs are not eligible for F-1 student status at UMFK.


Mission Statement

The mission of the Business management program is to develop students as liberally-educated citizens, life-long learners in a changing world, proficient business managers, and entrepreneurs.


Program Goals

The Business Management program strives to:

  • Offer a broad selection of management concentrations to meet the needs of our stakeholders (Stewardship);
  • Provide excellence in teaching and learning (Learning);
  • Prepare students for careers in areas of business that satisfy students’ wishes and employers’ needs (Collaboration);
  • Educate students in the liberal arts in order to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of society and the world (Citizenship); and
  • Establish and nurture an institutional culture of systemic quality improvement (Excellence).

Student Learning Outcomes

The Business Management program prepares students for careers in business. The objectives of the program are that the graduate will be a knowledgeable, proficient, well-rounded, professional person who is literate, numerate, and analytical; this person will be appreciative of the arts and sciences as well as possess skills in interpersonal communication and leadership.


Accreditation

The University of Maine at Fort Kent is accredited through the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)


Program Admission Requirements

  1. A high school diploma, certificate, or equivalent;

  2. A minimum cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in previous college courses;

  3. Left your previous institution in good academic and financial standing;

  4. Previously earned at least 60 college credits transferable from an eligible higher education institution (a maximum of 90 credits is eligible to transfer into the program);

  5. Ability to access regularly the online curriculum via a digital device using the internet.

Please note, international students enrolled in distance education (online) programs are not eligible for F-1 student status at UMFK.


Graduation Requirements

To be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Business Management Online Degree Completion Track, graduates must:

  • Complete a minimum of 120 semester credit hours
  • Earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0
  • Complete the General Education Requirements (All Bachelor Degree Programs)  
  • Complete at least 36 semester hours of upper level credits (course numbers of 300 or greater) in each of which a minimum grade of “C” shall be earned
  • Complete program required courses with a grade of C or better
  • Complete an independent concentration of at least 18 credits (at least 6 courses)
  • Fulfill the UMFK Residency Requirements
  • Complete the Graduation Application

Techniques for Assessment


  • Comprehensive course exams of core business skills required prior to graduation.
  • Individual student projects with demonstrations of knowledge and skills.
  • Graduate and Alumni Surveys.

Total: 30 credits


Required General Education Courses


  • Students must meet the   of the university.
  • Students will confer with their advisor upon entry to the program concerning meeting general education requirements prior to graduation through transfer credits or other mechanisms.

Required: HUM 102/103


  • First-time students will be enrolled in HUM 102.  Based on the number of credits transferred into UMFK, a transfer student will enroll in either Hum 102 and Hum 103.  Your advisor will assist you in determining which course to be enrolled in.
  • A minimum of a C grade is required to be considered a passing grade.
  • Transfer or readmittance students with 60 or more credits are exempt from completing this course.

90 credits - Suggested Course Sequencing


Students with at least 90 earned college credits must complete the ten core courses (30 credits) in the Business Management (BS) online degree completion program at UMaine Fort Kent.

Each online course is offered in the seven (7) week module during the semester listed.

The program for students with at least 90 earned credits can be finished in as little as one year by following the course sequence listed on the program website.

60 credits - Suggested Course Sequencing


Students with at least 60 earned college credits must complete the ten (10) core courses (30 credits) in the B.S. Business Management online program at UMaine Fort Kent.

Additionally, students must choose from the online business electives to fulfill their remaining credits to finish the degree. Students will confer with their advisor to choose the elective courses appropriate for their degree plan and schedule.

Students only need to take the number of elective credits needed to fulfill the program requirements.

Examples:

  • If a student enters the program with 84 credits, the student completes the 10 core courses (30 credits), plus two (2) business electives (6 credits)
  • If a student enters the program with 75 credits, the student completes the 10 core courses (30 credits) plus five (5) business elective courses (15 credits)
  • If a student enters the program with 60 credits, the student completes the 10 core courses (30 credits), plus ten (10) business electives (30 credits)
